Heartbreaking Photo of Arizona Man Who Died During Routine Dental Procedure Emerges as Family Reaches Wrongful Death Settlement

A haunting selfie taken just hours before an Arizona man suffered a fatal brain injury during a routine dental implant procedure has resurfaced, as his grieving parents reach a settlement in his wrongful death lawsuit.

On March 3, 2023, 40-year-old Derek Swanson snapped a cheerful selfie from the dentist’s chair, captioning it: "Yesterday, new car. Today, implant! Fun never stops."

An avid gym-goer, Swanson was excited to finally get a long-awaited dental implant. He scheduled the procedure at Scottsdale Facial and Oral Surgery—but tragically, he never woke up after complications with the anesthesia.

After suffering a brain injury, he was placed on life support and tragically passed away on March 10, 2023, according to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner.

“He was so excited. He had fixed a lot of teeth, and they were looking really nice,” his mother, Brenda Swanson, told ABC15.

Brenda told the outlet that she had been with her son on the day of the surgery, only to be left waiting in the lobby for hours.

“They called Derek back, and that I won’t forget. He turned around and he gave me a wink and said, ‘love you,’ and he walked back,” she said.

“I just kept waiting and waiting, and Derek wasn’t coming out,” she added.

Brenda and Bill Swanson filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Dr. Derek Lamb and the Scottsdale surgery clinic.

This week, the wrongful death lawsuit was finally settled for an undisclosed sum.

The Swansons’ lawsuit claimed that Dr. Lamb and the clinic made a critical error during anesthesia, depriving Derek of oxygen and causing a fatal brain injury.

The grieving parents are also pushing to change Arizona law, seeking to require both a dentist and an anesthetist to be present during dental surgeries.

Under current Arizona law, a dentist can perform surgery and administer anesthesia without an anesthetist present, as long as they hold the proper state permit.

“We would like to not have another family go through what we had to go through and are going through and will be for the rest of our life,” Swanson told the outlet.
