Inside Rob and Nick Reiner’s Explosive Fight at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas Party—Parents Were Terrified

Rob Reiner’s troubled son, Nick, allegedly spiraled out of control after a heated confrontation at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday — a blow-up so intense it left guests shaken and Reiner fearing what his drug-addicted son might do next, friends said. Hours later, that fear would turn into an unthinkable tragedy.

The three reportedly erupted into a “very loud argument,” with sources telling FaqInsurances on Monday that tensions flared after Nick allegedly relapsed and once again refused treatment — despite having cycled through rehab at least 17 times since he was 15.

“Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous,’’ a source told People magazine.

The bitter and highly charged confrontation occurred less than 24 hours before Nick was allegedly involved in the fatal attack on his parents at the family’s Los Angeles mansion.

“They had had an argument at Conan’s holiday party, and Rob had been telling people that they’re scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating,’’ a lifelong family friend who lives near the Reiner home told FaqInsurances.

“Nick was supposedly off drugs,” but then talk surfaced that he was “not so much off them,’’ the neighbor said, explaining that at the accused killer son’s lowest point over the years, he was “badly addicted to a combo of opiates and heroin.”

Another friend of the family said, “I know [the parents] wanted him to get help, go to rehab, but he wanted to get help while at home — he did not want to get treatment at a facility."

“And I know they have argued about that for years.’’

Rob, 78, a Hollywood icon remembered for playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family and directing hits like Stand By Me and The Princess Bride, reportedly left Conan O’Brien’s holiday gathering with his wife, Michele, 68, soon after a heated fight, TMZ said.

This tense showdown unfolded only a few months after Nick and his dad had been involved in another heated public dispute.

Nick allegedly erupted at his father, shouting in front of shocked diners at the high-end Giorgio Baldi restaurant in Santa Monica Canyon, a staffer told FaqInsurances.

Around 3:40 p.m. on Sunday, Romy, 28, Nick’s sister and a magazine writer aspiring to act, reportedly found their parents dead.

She reportedly told investigators at the time that her brother “should be a suspect” because he was “dangerous,” sources said — and hours later, Nick was arrested and charged with the murders.

Authorities reportedly held him without bail and put him on suicide watch.

Rob and Michele’s other son, 34-year-old Jake, has made a name for himself as a TV reporter in Houston and as the host of a Dodgers podcast.

The legendary actor and director, previously wed to former sitcom star Penny Marshall, also took in his ex-wife’s daughter, Tracy Marshall Reiner, as his own.

“I came from the greatest family ever,” Tracy, 61, told NBC News on Monday. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”

The last time Nick appeared in public with his parents and siblings, Jake and Romy, he was unsmiling as the family walked the red carpet on Sept. 9 at the Spinal Tap II: The End Continues premiere in Los Angeles’ Egyptian Theatre.

He had struggled with drug addiction for over half his life, often finding himself broke and homeless, sometimes sleeping on the streets, he said in interviews.

Back in 2015, he started an environmental nonprofit named Save Malibu, though it didn’t survive past its first year.

"These poor people did everything to help this kid," the family friend told FaqInsurances, noting that Nick was balking at going back to a treatment facility.

Rob pulled out all the stops to help Nick bring the 2015 semi-autobiographical movie Being Charlie to life, using his own directing expertise and calling in Hollywood favors to assemble a star-studded cast and crew.

A cast member described his son as “spoiled” and ungrateful.

At least once during filming, the pair erupted into a vicious argument in front of the cast and crew, with them “just going off on each other,” stunt performer Erik Audé told Page Six. “You could tell [Nick] was spoiled and Rob was just sick of his s–t.

“I just assumed, whether this is correct or not, this kid must be pushing all his buttons,” Audé said. “Rob can’t do anything right.

“[Nick’s] a nepo baby, a spoiled kid to the tee.”

Despite any attempts at reconciliation during the project, the awkward father-son pair couldn’t overcome Nick’s deep-seated resentment of his father, himself the son of the legendary late comedian Carl Reiner.

“I think [Nick] really resented his dad — or maybe hated himself — for not being as talented, prolific or beloved as his dad or granddad,’’ a source told Page Six.

Just two months before he died, Rob Reiner sat down with Piers Morgan and was asked which of his films he wanted audiences to remember most.

“People have their favorites. They, you know, and the cliché, we love all our children, even the bad ones,” Rob said.

Even before the tragic events of the weekend, Nick’s simmering resentment toward his father appears to have boiled over into something far more sinister.

“This is not the first time their son has been violent,’’ the family friend said the day after the parents’ slayings.

“I know of another incident a few years back with Nick, but I won’t say more than that. I just never thought it would ever get to this point.

“It is such a nightmare.’’

Back in 2018, Nick confessed that he had gone on a meth-fueled rampage that left his parents’ home in ruins.

“It’s not much of a story. I got totally spun out on uppers — I think it was coke and something else — and I was up for days on end,” Nick told the “Dopey’’ podcast. “I started punching out some things in my guest house.”

When she heard the news, a former classmate of Nick’s told FaqInsurances on Monday that she “instantly knew” he was the one responsible for his parents’ murders.

Nick had reportedly been living with his parents for at least the past year, a security guard hired to patrol the family’s ritzy Brentwood neighborhood after January’s Palisades Fire told FaqInsurances.

“You could tell something was a little off with him,’’ the worker, Trevor Taufahema, said of the son.
“He’s a strange individual, you know?”

The security guard revealed that Nick would allow just one friend into his parents’ multimillion-dollar home.

Standing near the residence, Taufahema said, “I would meet him right here.”

“I’m not sure who he was, but I’d always see [Nick] sneak off with him. I don’t know what they were doing.”

Hollywood’s glittering film community was stunned and shaken by the shocking murders of Rob and Michele Reiner.

Kathy Bates, who starred in Reiner’s 1990 film “Misery,” which won her an Oscar, told FaqInsurances, “I’m horrified hearing this terrible news. Absolutely devastated.”

Director Ron Howard took to Twitter to share his thoughts on Rob. “He proved to be a superlative filmmaker, a supportive colleague and at all times a dedicated citizen.’’
