Erie Insurance Fully Restores Services Following Month-Long Disruption; Assures Data Security

Erie Insurance announces the full restoration of business operations following a month-long network outage.

The company also stated that there is “no evidence” indicating the threat actor accessed any sensitive personal information, financial data, or legally protected records during the incident.

“Key services and systems have been safely and securely restored and our local agents, claims teams and customer care teams have returned to regular ways of serving customers,” the company announced on July 7.

Erie faces two class action lawsuits alleging that a ransomware group infiltrated the insurer’s network and caused a data breach. However, the insurer’s recent statement denies that any such breach occurred.

Erie’s announcement of fully restored operations came five days after Philadelphia Insurance confirmed all its systems were back online following a network outage. “We have resumed regular operations, though we continue to address minor technical issues as they arise,” the company stated in a July 2 update on its handling of its network outage that began June 9.

Although neither insurer has disclosed the source of their cybersecurity incidents, the Google Threat Intelligence Group reports that the hacking group known as Scattered Spider has shifted its focus from retailers to insurance companies and is likely responsible for the attacks on Erie, Philadelphia, and a potential data breach at insurer Aflac.
