Vietnam Travel Insurance - Required Visitors Coverage
Category:
Travel Medical Insurance
Planning a trip to Vietnam & wondering if travel insurance is required? Find out the Vietnam travel insurance requirements for your upcoming trip.
Yes, all visitors to Vietnam must be covered by a minimum of travel medical insurance with a liability of $10,000 or more for COVID-19 treatment. A more robust travel insurance policy for a trip to Vietnam is optional, but highly recommended due to the unpredictable nature of international travel.
Although the only travel insurance legally required to visit Vietnam is the medical coverage related to COVID-19, there are many other aspects of a trip overseas that can quickly become costly if things go awry. Travel insurance for Vietnam can be a great a-set in unexpected situations, lessening the financial burden on a traveler in an emergency or otherwise difficult situation.
Vietnam trip insurance can include a variety of coverages designed to a-sist travelers in unforeseen situations. Travelers may choose between plans that offer specific coverage for their unique concerns, which may include airline delays or disruptions, sudden illness or injury while abroad, trip cancellation, and much more. These coverages do vary by plan, so be sure to review your policy carefully before purchasing.
The price of Vietnam travel protection can vary depending on the age, health status, and number of travelers being covered, as well as the duration of the trip and type of coverage.
As risk involved with the trip increases, prices may also increase. For example, a trip to Vietnam that lasts one week may cost less than a two-week trip, even if the type of coverage is the same, due to the extended length of the trip. Additionally, a traveler with pre-existing health conditions can usually expect to pay higher rates than a traveler who does not have any diagnosed pre-existing conditions.

Health financing is one of key functions of a national health system. Health financing is about mobilizing funds, pooling them and using these funds to pay for health services in order to meet the people’s need for health care, for individuals and society at large. The way the country mobilizes funds and pays for health care largely influences availability, accessibility and affordability of services and therefore is critical for reaching universal health coverage (UHC).
Countries around the world use different ways to mobilize funds for health care; usually classified as public” or “private.” When the funds used to pay for health care is from the government tax revenues or from social health insurance revenues, they are regarded as public financing. If payments for health care are from household or patients’ out-of-pocket payment, or through private health insurance, they are regarded as private financing. Private financing based on out-of-pocket payment can limit access to health care when needed and put households at financial risk or impoverishment. Public financing allows for collecting funds based on household’s ability to contribute, and paying for health care based on needs, while protecting households from financial hardship.
Social health insurance in Viet Nam was established in 1992, and is now regarded as the main method of public financing for health care. The government uses its tax revenues to subsidize vulnerable groups such as the poor, the ethnic minority, children under 6, and the elderly above 80. The current health insurance coverage is about 87% of the population. There is a need to improve equity and efficiency in the fund’s use through strategic purchasing. Out-of-pocket payment for health has decreased but remains high, and accounts for about 41% of total health expenditure (2016).
As of 2018, 87% of the Vietnamese population is covered by social health insurance. The poor, ethnic minority, under 6 children and elderly above 80, and socially vulnerable groups are fully covered via the government full subsidy for premium. Near poor and households are partially subsidized. Most of health insurance fund, about 70%, is being spent at secondary and tertiary levels.
Viet Nam’s total health expenditure accounts for about 6.5% of GDP (2016), of which about a half is spent from public financing mechanism, including the government tax revenues and social health insurance.
Universal health coverage in Viet Nam
Universal health coverage (UHC) means everyone – all individuals and communities – having access to quality, needed services that are affordable.
Universal health coverage (UHC) means everyone – all individuals and communities – having access to quality, needed services that are affordable. The spectrum of services includes health promotion, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care. UHC serves as the overarching platform for achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UHC is not just about health financing – it reflects the importance of having equitable access to good quality health services and realizing the right to health, especially for vulnerable populations. Globally, countries monitor UHC through the service coverage delivery index (SDG target 3.8.1) and financial protection (SDG target 3.8.2) indicators, among other qualitative and quantitative measures.
Viet Nam is committed to accelerating UHC and strengthening primary health care as the foundation for UHC, especially when faced with emerging challenges of the rise of non-communicable diseases and increasing ageing population. It continues to make progress on addressing the needs of vulnerable populations, including the “missing middle.”

Moving to Vietnam? Learn everything about the healthcare system, from the hospitals & public healthcare to expat health insurance in Vietnam.
Vietnam is fast becoming a popular choice among expats. The country offers the ideal combination of good earning potential, low cost of living and high quality of life. Healthcare in Vietnam combines aspects of Eastern and Western medicines to treat most medical issues.
Plans are currently underway to develop a universal healthcare system. As it stands, most Vietnamese citizens have to pay for medical services themselves at both public and private hospitals. In many cases, people who can afford it opt to use private facilities as these tend to be better equipped and more efficient.
Before venturing to another country, make sure you have a health insurance plan you can rely on. Our international health insurance plans offer comprehensive health cover for when you are in your home country and abroad.
Public hospitals in Vietnam are often underfunded and inadequately equipped. Doctors and medical staff at these facilities generally only speak Vietnamese. Furthermore, waiting times can be frustratingly long. In rural areas, the quality and availability of healthcare is considerably worse, and in some of the more remote parts of the country public healthcare is almost non-existent.
The standard of private hospitals in Vietnam is excellent and more or less in line with standards that most expats would be used to. Private hospitals in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City are often staffed by doctors and medical professionals who completed their studies in the USA, Korea, Japan and France. Furthermore, as doctors in these hospitals have often trained overseas, they are generally likely to speak good English and/or French.

When I first left to work in Vietnam I was not working in the insurance business. I worked as an expat for over 20 years living in many diverse countries around the world. I always took the cheapest medical insurance on offer and moved from year to year.
Consequently I am now in my 50s and living with several existing, un-insurable conditions due to my constant switching and reluctance to choose a suitable insurance provider and sticking with them.
This was a poor decision as I now know. I took out an individual or claims risk international medical policy, yet was not informed by the insurance company that my existing condition of Diabetes Type 2 would be excluded as would any related condition.
By this stage I knew that this policy would cover me in all the countries I was spending time in, and it would provide me with excellent coverage of over USD$1-million-dollars on hospitalization and allow me to self insure my outpatient treatment, while covering my Diabetes Type 2 in terms of hospitalization, related conditions, and medical emergencies.

Understanding Vietnam's healthcare system if you're an expat, including what to expect at hospitals and rural healthcare.
Vietnam’s healthcare system has made impressive strides over the past ten years. The country continues to make strong progress towards its goal of achieving universal healthcare. Where once patients had to leave the country for complex medical care, today this need is all but eliminated. Life expectancy is slowly increasing and Vietnam has done an impressive job running public health campaigns. For instance, according to the Global Monitoring Report, 97% of Vietnamese children receive their immunizations. However, significant room for improvement remains. At present, Vietnam’s healthcare system is ranked 160th out of 191 countries by the World Health Organization.
The government of Vietnam is moving towards universal healthcare. The country’s Master Plan for Universal Coverage aims to slash out-of-pocket costs for patients in half. Whereas patients once paid up to 80% of their healthcare costs, the Master Plan hopes to reduce that by 40%.
As of 2019, 87.7% of Vietnam’s population, an estimated 83.6 million people, are covered by public health insurance. This is a significant increase from 2014 when 71.6% of the population was covered. As well, 90% of the population in the seven northern provinces have health insurance coverage, far surpassing initial targets.
As it slowly moves towards universal healthcare, Vietnam is modernizing its entire healthcare administration, starting with electronic records. Since June 2019, an ambitious project to manage electronic health records based on social security numbers has been in place.
Unlike some countries, Vietnam doesn’t require incoming expats to hold private health insurance in order to apply for a work permit or qualify for residency. However, all foreigners must have clean bill of health in order to receive a work permit. In order to prove that you’re healthy, you must obtain a medical certificate from a local hospital or clinic.
