Although it is recognized as one of the Fortune 500 companies, it should be noted that USAA is not a corporation. Its mother company, United Services Automobile A-sociation is an inter-insurance exchange. As such, it is made up of current and former military officers and NCOs who have carried out property and casualty policies with USAA. With this, they are insured simultaneously by each other and as a group.

This insurance company was established in 1992 by a group of army officers in the USA in order to protect each other when they weren’t able to provide security for their automobiles, since they were perceived as a high-risk group. Since then, USAA has developed to serve various members of the Armed Forces, and those who honorable served in the United States Armed Forces.

USAA is also one of the direct marketing pioneers, and most of its businesses are done through the internet or telephone, and instead of using agents, it used employees. In the early 1960s, most of its transactions were done through mail, but as time went by (starting in the latter part of 1960s), it created a shift from mail to sales which were phone-based.

In the year 1978, a toll-free number was launched, and in 1999, through its established website, it started its internet sales and service. USAA provides a wide range of personal property and casualty insurance, which includes vehicle, homeowner, renters, valuable personal property, and umbrella insurance policies. Aside from that, it extends to providing policies for whole and term life insurance and annuities.

The United Services Automobile A-sociation (USAA) is a San Antonio-based Fortune 500 diversified financial services group of companies including a Texas Department of Insurance-regulated reciprocal inter-insurance exchange and subsidiaries offering banking, investing, and insurance to people and families who serve, or served, in the United States Armed Forces.[7][8] At the end of 2020, it had more than 13 million members.[9]

USAA was founded in 1922 in San Antonio by a group of 25 U.S. Army officers as a mechanism for mutual self-insurance when they were unable to secure auto insurance because of the perception that they, as military officers, were a high-risk group.[10][11] USAA has since expanded to offer banking and insurance services to past and present members of the Armed Forces, officers and enlisted, and their families. The company ranked No. 96th in the 2020 Fortune 500 list of the largest United States corporations by total revenue[12] and appeared on Fortune's 2021 Blue Ribbon list of companies, placing No. 355 on the Fortune Global 500, No. 94 on the Fortune 500, No. 55 on the 100 Best Companies to Work For and World’s Most Admired Companies.[13]

The organization was originally called the United States Army Automobile A-sociation. In 1924, the name was changed to United Services Automobile A-sociation, when commissioned officers of other U.S. military services became eligible for membership. The company was formed based on a meeting of twenty-five United States Army Officers on June 20, 1922, at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, to discuss the procurement of reliable and economical auto insurance. Despite initial success, by the late 1920s a dispute between competing factions for control of the company threatened its long term viability.[14] The issue was resolved when feuding members agreed to hire a leader from outside, resulting in the 1928 appointment of Major General Ernest Hinds as general manager and secretary-treasurer.[14] Hinds provided stability and remained in the position until his 1941 death.[14]

USAA is a pioneer of the concept of direct marketing; most of its business is conducted over the Internet or telephone using employees instead of agents. Until the 1960s, the bulk of its business was conducted via mail. In the late 1960s, USAA began a transition from mail to phone-based sales and service. It launched a toll-free number in 1978, and Internet sales and service in June 1999 via its website.[17]

USAA offered restricted membership to civilians between September 2009 and August 2013. This membership provided access to USAA's investment products, most bank deposit products, and life insurance. Auto and property insurance policies were not included for non-military members due to eligibility restrictions.[18]

This discussion is believed to be helpful in providing the reader with background information to facilitate a better understanding of the various aspects of the present disclosure. Accordingly, it should be understood that these statements are to be read in this light, and not as admissions of prior art.

“Checks typically provide a safe and convenient method for an individual such as a payor to transfer funds to a payee. To use a check, the individual usually opens a checking account, or other similar account, at a financial institution and deposits funds, which are then available for later withdrawal. To transfer funds with a check, the payor usually designates a payee and an amount payable on the check. In addition, the payor often signs the check. Once the check has been signed, it is usually deemed negotiable, meaning the check may be validly transferred to the payee upon delivery. By signing and transferring the check to the payee, the payor authorizes funds to be withdrawn from the payor’s account on behalf of the payee. Certain types of checks, such as teller checks (i.e., cashier’s checks) are backed by the issuing bank. Accordingly, they may be preferred for transactions in which the payor/payee wish to have additional levels of protection.”

Because teller checks are guaranteed by the issuing bank, it may be desirable to generate teller checks that include enhanced security features that discourage counterfeiting. While certain types of security features, such as specialized check paper stock, may be available for physical teller checks, such features cannot be used for virtual teller checks as well. Provided herein is a teller check system with enhanced security features that may be used in conjunction with virtual and/or physical teller checks. The enhanced security features may include a visible pattern or picture on the teller check that is rendered in a manner such that the pattern or picture may be extracted from an image of the teller check. In certain embodiments, a physical teller check or a virtual teller check may be provided. That is, in certain embodiments, the teller check is not printed and is provided electronically through all stages of the issuing to verification and funds distribution process.
