Medicare Supplemental Dental Insurance: Best Medicare Dental Plans
FInd out how Medicare supplemental dental insurance can help you fill the gaps in your Medicare plan. Learn about your options now.
Since Medicare on its own doesn't cover dental treatment, many Medicare recipients are looking for Medicare supplemental dental insurance. This is typically in the form of a Medicare Advantage Plan, but it can also be a standalone dental plan provided by a private insurer.
Additionally, 18% of those 65 and older have untreated tooth decay, and this is of course exacerbated in communities of color thanks to lack of access to proper treatment and services.
In these situations, the required dental care may be covered. For instance, your Medicare Part A, which covers treatment in the hospital, can cover emergency dental treatment received in the hospital.
That being said, you shouldn't go into any procedure expecting Medicare to pay for your dental care, because even in the situations listed above, there might be some catch that makes your treatment ineligible for coverage.
Medicare supplement plans offer coverage for what your Medicare doesn't cover. This means they cover deductibles, coinsurance and copays. It doesn't mean that they cover dental. So if you get a Medicare supplement plan, you can purchase dental packages as add-ons if the insurance company offers it.

When your dental care costs exceed the limit of your insurance, supplemental dental insurance can help you save. Find the best supplemental insurance option.
Depending on your circumstances, you might want a supplemental coverage plan only for a year or two – perhaps to help pay for orthodontia (braces) or expensive care such as dental implants. Or you may need continual coverage – typically people who are on Medicare choose to add a supplemental plan that covers their dental care.
Unfortunately, original Medicare has extremely limited dental coverage. Medicare Part A provides coverage if you need to be hospitalized, and Part B provides medical coverage. Dental procedures that are connected with healthcare are covered by Medicare – such as a dental cleaning performed before transplant surgery, or an extraction required as part of the treatment plan to address another disease such as medical reconstruction of the jawbone.
Medicare typically does not cover emergency dental care, even if it is performed in a hospital, but it likely will cover the hospital costs. Medicare does not routine dental care, such as dental exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures.
You should also be aware that Medigap plans, supplemental health insurance purchased from private company to pay health care costs not covered by Original Medicare. such as co-payments, deductibles, and health care if you travel outside the U.S – typically do not cover senior dental care.
Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called “Part C” or “MA Plans,” are provided by private companies that have been approved by Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans must provide all of all of the services that Original Medicare covers except hospice care. Medicare Advantage Plans may offer extra coverage, like vision, hearing, dental, and/or health and wellness programs. Most include Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D). In addition to the Medicare Part B premium, people typically pay a monthly premium for the Medicare Advantage Plan. In 2016, the Part B premium is $104.90 each month.

What's Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)? | Medicare
Read about Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance), which helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover.
and is sold by private companies. Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs, like:
Note
Note: Medigap plans sold to people new to Medicare can no longer cover the Part B deductible. Because of this, Plans C and F are no longer available to people new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. However, if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, but not yet enrolled, you may be able to buy one of these plans that cover the Part B deductible (Plan C or F). If you already have or were covered by Plan C or F (or the Plan F high deductible version) before January 1, 2020, you can keep your plan.
Some Medigap policies also cover services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, here's what happens:
It’s important to compare Medigap policies since the costs can vary between plans offered by different companies for exactly the same coverage, and may go up as you get older. Some states limit Medigap premium costs.
Medigap policies can no longer be sold with drug coverage, but if you have an older Medigap policy that was sold with drug coverage (before January 1, 2006), you can keep it. You may choose to join a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D). because most Medigap drug coverage isn’t
creditable prescription drug coverage
, and you may pay more if you join a drug plan later. If you buy Medigap and a Medicare drug plan from the same company, you may need to make 2 separate premium payments. Contact the company to find out how to pay your premiums.

When you retired, you may have lost access to a dental plan you enjoyed for years through your previous employer. Many seniors rely on Medicare for their health care coverage with over 60 million Medicare beneficiaries in 2020¹, but Traditional Medicare typically doesn’t cover dental care. As a result, about 60% of seniors over the age of 65 don’t have dental insurance.²
Regular dental care is important for everyone, but it’s particularly important for seniors. People over 65 are at an increased for oral health problems, such as gum disease³, and without dental insurance, you might find yourself putting off treatment. Advancing age can bring all kinds of dental and periodontal (gum) issues, many of which need proper treatment to prevent further health issues that may result from them.
Supplemental dental insurance is called supplemental because it’s designed as additional to the coverage that any person insured may have. Dental insurance providers offer plans that have the dental coverage that seniors on Medicare may need. Most dental insurance plans cover preventive services at up to 100% so seniors don’t have to pay out-of-pocket at all for regular dental cleanings, such as X-rays, or regular exams.
Depending on the plan that you choose, and the coverage provided by that plan you may only have to pay a portion of the cost of major dental services like crowns, root canals, or implants. For seniors on fixed incomes, dental insurance can make it possible to get major dental work done without having to go into debt or go without dental care that they might need. Guardian Direct® dental insurance plans have and guaranteed acceptance, no waiting period for oral exams, cleanings, and x-rays, so you can get dental care you need* With affordable monthly premiums and a large nationwide network of providers.
Medicare coverage is divided into four parts: Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D. Medicare parts A and B usually combine to make up what most people think of as Traditional Medicare coverage. Medicare Part A typically covers hospital expenses if you need to be admitted to a hospital for medical treatment because of an illness or accident. It also typically covers some services related to hospital care, like having a nurse at home during recovery after a surgery. Medicare Part B covers doctor visits, preventive services, and some home health visits. Some people a-sume that Medicare Part B covers dental care because it covers certain preventative services but Medicare Part B doesn’t typically cover any type of dental care⁴. You can find out more about what Medicare Parts A and B cover here.

Supplemental Dental Insurance: Should You get a Second Plan?
Category:
Supplemental Dental Insurance May Help You Pay For Dental
What is supplemental dental insurance and why might you want to purchase it? Find out how a secondary dental plan can help cover your costs.
Supplemental dental insurance is a secondary dental insurance plan that you purchase to supplement your existing plan. The plan you have now may have long waiting periods or low annual maximums. It's in these cases that another plan could help.
Around 74 million Americans don't have dental insurance. And many who do still find that their plan doesn't cover the costs they need it to. That's where supplemental dental insurance comes in.
Supplemental dental insurance can be difficult to understand, but essentially, it's an insurance plan that you purchase when you already have dental insurance. Your existing plan may have long waiting periods or a low annual maximum, or maybe it doesn't cover the treatment you need. In any of these cases, you might want to get a supplemental plan to fill in the gaps.
When people refer to supplemental dental insurance, they may be talking about a dental insurance plan to supplement their Medicare insurance, since Medicare Parts A and B don't cover dental. Or, they may be talking about a dental plan to supplement their existing dental insurance.
Many hope that a secondary dental insurance plan can be purchased to cover the gaps left from their existing plan and that the two plans together will result in complete coverage for all treatments needed. Unfortunately, this isn't how it typically works out.

Supplemental Dental Insurance
Supplemental dental insurance is purchased to fill the gaps in your dental or health insurance coverage, but how does it work? Find out if it's right for you.
Supplemental dental insurance is purchased to fill the gaps in a policy holder’s dental or medical coverage. Gaps in coverage can occur when the primary policy’s annual spending limit is reached, or when a policy doesn’t provide coverage for necessary or desired dental treatments.
This article outlines the most typical scenarios that result in a need for supplemental dental insurance such as limited or no dental insurance, or running out of dental benefits due to a need for expensive treatments such as braces, root canals, crowns and dental implants.
Medicare does not cover dental care or treatments such as cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, dentures, bridges, root canals or crowns. There are a few extremely limited exceptions to this rule – for example, if you need to be hospitalized to receive complicated or emergency dental treatment, Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) may cover inpatient costs but not the fees a-sociated with the actual dental treatments.
Consequently, Medicare policy holders tend to look for broader health coverage through a Medicare Advantage program – a Medicare-sanctioned, regulated program offered by private health insurance providers. These plans are widely considered to be supplemental coverage, even though they are technically providing an alternative to the basic Medicare offering.
Some Medicare Advantage plans do include dental benefits, others do not. Check the plan’s documentation to determine if dental is included. Then look at how many providers are in the plan’s network, and whether your dentist accepts the plan. And check to see if the plan offers any additional benefits that matter to you as well, some Medicare Advantage plans provide vision and prescription coverage/savings along with dental.
