Prescription drug spending in the United States grew to nearly $370 billion in 2019, accounting for nearly 10% of total health expenditures. On a per-capita basis, inflation-adjusted retail prescription drug spending in the U.S has ballooned over the last six decades, growing from $90 in 1960 to $1,025 in 2017, and increasing even more, to $1,229, by 2019.

According to the CDC, 48.6% of adults have used at least one prescription drug in the past 30 days, 24% have used three or more, and 12.8% have used five or more.

Given the cost of prescriptions, it's clear that prescription drug coverage is a significant part of a comprehensive health insurance plan. But as drug prices rise, many insurance companies have put more restrictions on what they will and will not cover. That means that even Americans who are enrolled in a plan with prescription drug coverage may incur substantial out-of-pocket costs.

Prior to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), close to 20% of individual/family health insurance plans did not cover prescription medications, according to a HealthPocket analysis. The ACA set a standard of essential health benefits, which includes prescription drug coverage on all new individual and small group health plans since 2014—the year the act took effect.

A formulary is a list of covered prescription drugs. Our drug list is reviewed and approved by an independent national committee comprised of physicians, pharmacists and other health care professionals who make sure the drugs on the formulary are safe and clinically effective.

Within the formulary, prescription drugs are divided into tiers. Depending on your plan, prescription drugs fall into one of five drug tiers which determines the price you pay. Some plans may have 3, 4 or 5 tiers, so be sure to check your benefits information to see which tiers are included.

Prescription insurance is a form of health coverage that can a-sist you with paying for prescription drugs and medications. A drug tier is how a prescription drug insurance plan’s formulary organizes groups of drugs, which is often done by cost. The tier that your prescription is listed in will impact your copayment. Usually, there are three or four different tiers.

If a drug is not on a formulary, then you are likely responsible for the full cost of the medication. The right plan should list your medications on its drug formulary. If you are taking a medication that is not on your plan’s drug formulary, consider some of the alternatives listed. You could even ask your doctor to submit a prior authorization request. This can allow you to have medically necessary medications added to your plan’s formulary.

Prescription insurance is supplemental health insurance that covers some or all of your prescription drug costs. If you’re lucky, you belong to an employer-sponsored health plan that includes this type of coverage. Employer plans usually offer good prescription coverage at relatively low cost to you. But if you don’t have this benefit (or health coverage at all), you may want to look into buying a separate prescription drug plan, especially if you spend a lot of money on your medications.

The cost of prescription insurance depends on the plan you purchase, your individual prescription needs, and other factors. A private policy that you buy from an insurance company will typically be more expensive than group coverage through an employer or other organization. The features of prescription insurance may also vary among plans. For example, some plans are discount plans that simply allow you to buy your medications at a lower cost than you’d otherwise get. Others work like a regular health plan, where you pay deductibles and/or co-payments on top of your premium.

In addition, you may want to consider a prescription plan that offers a mail-service feature. With this feature, certain prescription drugs that you take regularly (such as diabetes medications) can be delivered right to your home. This can come in very handy if you have trouble getting out of the house or if you frequently have to fill prescriptions. Also, you may receive an even bigger discount on prescription drugs that are delivered to you through the mail.

Effective March 1, 2013, New Jersey must suspend accepting new applications for NJ Protect. This means new applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Friday March 1, 2013. All applications received after 5 p.m. on Friday March 1, 2013 must be rejected.

The decision to suspend enrollment was made by the federal government. NJ Protect operates with federal funding and thus New Jersey is suspending enrollment in NJ Protect as required by the federal government.
