Whether you’re purchasing your first auto insurance policy or shopping around to ensure you are getting the best deal, chances are you already know the importance of auto insurance.
It helps protect you from financial loss if you’re responsible for an accident, pays for medical bills after an accident and shields you from uninsured or underinsured motorists.
Louisiana law only requires drivers to carry minimum liability coverage on any automobile they own or risk facing costly penalties such as fines and car impoundment. Auto lenders may require additional coverages such as collision and/or comprehensive insurance.
If you are a policyholder who is not satisfied with a personal auto damage claim, you can submit a complaint form online. Our Office of Consumer Services can also a-sist you if you have a question about your policy.

This insurance helps cover the costs of damages or injuries you may have inflicted on others if you are responsible for an accident. You must carry evidence of insurance in your vehicle at all times, and provide it to law enforcement and others involved in an accident with you upon request.
While this is the minimum amount as required by law, drivers are strongly urged to consider higher limits. It’s also important to note that, while Louisiana law does not require you to have collision and comprehensive coverages, you may have to purchase both as part of your car’s finance or lease agreement.
If you are caught driving without insurance in Louisiana, not only are you subject to penalties and fines, but being without insurance will also prevent you from making insurance claims regardless of who is at fault in the accident. You must also carry valid auto insurance in order to apply for or renew your vehicle’s registration. If you do now show proof of insurance to law enforcement upon request, they have the authority to remove your license plate and give you a Temporary Vehicle Use Authorization, allowing you to operate your car for 3 days to give you time to provide proof of insurance to the Office of Motor Vehicles. They may also impound your car altogether.
Choosing the insurance that’s actually right for you may seem overwhelming. Don’t go it alone — have one of our friendly, knowledgeable agents help you cut through the nonsense, and get you the security you need while you’re out on the road. Just fill out the form to get started!

In Louisiana, you must carry proof of insurance at all times when you are driving. Be ready to present it if you are asked by law enforcement. Furthermore, if you have an auto loan or lease your vehicle, your lender or leasing company may require you to carry additional insurance.
Like is the case with many other states, liability insurance is required for all drivers in the state of Louisiana. Liability coverage pays for bodily injuries and property damage you cause to another driver in an accident you are found to be at fault for. Liability insurance will never pay for damages or injuries you have. You would need to expand your policy coverage for that. The amount of liability insurance you must carry is known as the limit. Liability coverage limits and the different aspects of an accident it covers will be explored in a later section.
Louisiana is one of 15 states that is a diminished value state, meaning that drivers can attempt to recover diminished value from the at-fault driver’s insurance company if they experience any losses when selling their vehicle. Even if your car has been fully repaired, the fact it was in an accident automatically brings down its value no matter the condition it is currently in. If you experience this loss when going to sell your car, you could make a diminished value claim with the other party’s insurance company.
As previously mentioned, with insurance policies comes coverage limits. Coverage limits are the minimum amount of insurance the state requires you to carry as a driver. For the state of Louisiana, these policy limits are expressed as 15/30/25. From an insurance company’s perspective, limits refer to the maximum amount they will pay out after a claim.
In short, no. Louisiana does not have an adequate enough required liability insurance minimum in order for you to carry it alone. This is evident just by looking at the property damage limits. $25,000 would barely begin to make a dent in the price for a new vehicle should the other driver need one. Medical expenses can also easily go well beyond the limit of $30,000. It is highly recommended that you purchase coverage limits well beyond what is required. You should also consider policy add-ons in order to fully protect yourself and your a-sets. Remember, anything that is not covered by your insurance, you will be responsible for.

Remove your license plate and give you a Temporary Vehicle Use Authorization, allowing you to operate your car for 3 days to give you time to provide proof of insurance to the Office of Motor Vehicles.
Remember! Anyone can get into an accident at any time. If you don't have car insurance, the “No Pay, No Play" law could end up costing you much more than if you'd purchased a car insurance policy.

Louisiana mandates bodily injury and property damage coverage with minimum limits of 15/30/25. Read about what this means to motorists driving in the Pelican State.
You must carry liability auto insurance with coverage amounts of at least $15k/$30k/$25k to register and drive legally in Louisiana. This insurance would cover your responsibility for any harm or damage to others or their properties in an accident you cause.
If you are ever pulled over by a law enforcement officer in Louisiana, you have to present proof of insurance. Your insurance ID card, a copy of your policy or a copy of the declaration page of that policy will all suffice.
A policy is made up of many different coverages, and to satisfy the Louisiana Financial Responsibility Law, your insurance policy needs to at least include bodily injury and property damage coverage. The Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) will verify your insurance when you are registering or renewing your car, that it contains the following coverage amount (limits):
Bodily Injury (BI): for each person injured in the other party, up to $15,000, and for each accident when there are more than one injured, to a total of $30,000. BI covers the other party, such as those who are in the other driver’s car, for any medical bills incurred from injuries caused by the accident you are at-fault for. In case the other motorist decides to sue you, your insurer also pays to hire a lawyer for you under BI. You can buy higher BI limits for more protection in the Pelican State.
Property Damage (PD): for the other party's any property damage, up to $25,000 per accident. PD covers the other driver’s car repair, as well as any other house or public property you damage during a crash you caused. Note that it does not cover any fixes or replacements to your own vehicle. Higher limits of PD are often recommended, and availability varies by LA insurer (although the extra protection will cost more).

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), two million people were injured in passenger vehicle accidents in 2014. Any traffic accident can be unsettling, and those involved may suffer minor injuries or serious ones. Because you may face repair bills and unexpected medical expenses, it’s important that you carry enough insurance coverage to pay for them, as well as the required amount set by your state laws.
Louisiana law also requires car insurance companies to include uninsured/underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage with any new policy that is issued in the state, unless the driver decides to waive the coverage in writing. However, some drivers choose to purchase UIM economic-only coverage that does not allow pain and suffering damages. UIM property damage coverage compensates you for repairs to your vehicle, minus a $250 deductible and up to $25,000 or the actual cash value of your vehicle.
Collision coverage pays to repair your vehicle if it’s determined that you’re at fault for the accident. Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your vehicle from theft, vandalism, storms, or other incidents that are not related to a collision. Collision and comprehensive coverage are not legally required by state law, but they’re almost always required by your lender if you used an auto loan to purchase your vehicle. However, even people who pay upfront for their vehicles often choose collision and comprehensive coverage to provide added protection.
Many drivers opt to purchase policies that provide higher coverage limits because a serious accident can easily create expenses that exceed the minimum state required liability coverage limits. When this happens, at-fault drivers who own property, have investments, or have other types of a-sets can be found liable for damages beyond what their insurance company is willing to pay. Without adequate insurance coverage, they may have to pay a significant amount that can negatively impact their investments and a-sets.
If you’re worried about protecting your a-sets but want to avoid paying unnecessary premiums, comparison shopping is helpful. Insurance carriers can vary widely in their cost for policies. Many also offer discounts to help you save money such as a price break for purchasing your homeowner’s insurance and auto insurance from the same carrier.

Learn about Louisiana car insurance laws and requirements so you're informed about how much coverage you need to legally drive.
Louisiana has some of the highest car insurance rates in the country, which is surprising because it also has relatively low insurance requirements. The state minimum required levels of liability insurance in Louisiana are lower than many other states, and don’t offer much financial protection in a serious accident.
Louisiana has a "no pay, no play" law, which means drivers who choose to drive without insurance may be unable to collect insurance payments for an accident where they are not at fault.
Louisiana’s state minimum insurance requirements are higher than some states, but are still relatively low. This means Louisiana drivers who only get the minimum required amount of coverage probably don’t have enough coverage to be protected in an accident.
Almost every state (including Louisiana) requires drivers to have minimum levels of liability insurance to protect other drivers from suffering financially after an at-fault accident. Liability insurance pays for damage you cause to someone else so that they aren’t left with huge financial expenses that were someone else’s fault.
Liability coverage is the part of your car insurance policy that pays for damage you cause in an at-fault accident. It’s broken into two parts: bodily injury liability, which covers the other driver’s injuries, and property damage liability, which covers damage you do to their car or other property.

The state of Louisiana requires drivers to provide the minimum mandatory liability auto insurance on any registered vehicle in the state. This insurance must be obtained through an authorized insurance company which has received approval from the state of Louisiana.
No vehicle will be registered in the state of Louisiana without proof of the minimum liability auto insurance. In fact, you may not be able to get or renew your driver’s license without proof of the minimum insurance coverage. The minimum liability auto insurance coverage in Louisiana is $15,000.00 of bodily injury insurance for each individual, $30,000.00 for two or more injured people and $25,000.00 for property damage. Any auto insurance policy purchased in Louisiana must include the minimum liability amounts.
You must carry proof of insurance with you at all times. Uninsured and underinsured motorist is not required by Louisiana law but the insurance company must offer you the option to purchase this coverage when you buy your minimum coverage. Should you choose not to take this option, you will have to sign a paper stating that you turned down the coverage. Comprehension and collision coverage is not required by the state of Louisiana.
Every motorized vehicle on Louisiana roads must be covered by the minimum liability coverage. This law also applies to rental vehicles. Your insurance policy usually covers rental vehicles. The credit card you use to rent the car may also cover the insurance on the vehicle. If this is not the case, you will have to purchase the minimum liability auto insurance policy from the rental car company. Be sure to carry the rental agreement in the car at all times. This is your proof of insurance should you be involved in an accident or get stopped for a traffic violation. The coverage provided by the rental company will run approximately $7.00 to $14.00 per day.
If you are involved in an accident or experience any type of traffic stop in the state of Louisiana, the police officer will request proof of insurance. You must have the proof of insurance even if you are not at fault. All insurance policies in the state are reported electronically by the insurance company as well as any lapses in policy coverage. Lack of insurance could result in fines, loss of your registration as well as other penalties. You may be required to show proof of insurance if you are pulled over for a traffic violation, when you apply for a registration or renew a driver’s license.
You must obtain the minimum insurance before you register your car. You will not be allowed to register your car without proof of insurance. If your insurance policy is cancelled for any reason, you must present proof of new coverage which is effective with in 10 days of the cancellation date. If the insurance was cancelled because you moved out of state, you sold the vehicle or the vehicle was junked, you must provide the state with proof of the event. After the 10 day period you will be charged $50.00. If you do not supply the state with the appropriate proof within 30 days the fine will become $125.00 and after 90 days it will increase to $225.00. The exceptions to the minimum mandatory liability insurance are off road vehicles, non operational non registered vehicles, parade or display vehicles, vehicles owned by a government agency, and city buses.
The penalties for not carrying current minimum liability auto insurance in the state of Louisiana will result in the confiscation of your vehicle or the placement of a yellow tag in your back window which indicates your lack of insurance proof to other police officers. Your license plate tags will also be taken. You will have three days to present proof of insurance to the state in order to retrieve your tags or vehicle. If you fail to provide the proof or you do not comply with the state laws, then you will be given fines, penalties and the suspension of your registration. Your vehicle will be taken and you will have to pay reinstatement fees of $50.00 and towing costs as well as provide proof of insurance to get your car back. You will face a $75.00 to $100.00 fine the first time, $100.00 to $250.00 fine the second time and a fine of up to $700.00 for each additional time you are caught without proof of insurance.
Your proof of insurance should be kept in the car at all times. This proof needs to include the name of the insurance company and the policy holder’s name. It also needs to have the make, model, and year of the vehicle being covered on it. The vehicle’s VIN number and the dates of coverage are also required to a-sure the law enforcement officer that the insurance is current. Acceptable forms of proof of insurance are your insurance card or binder, I.D. card issued by your insurance company, your declaration page, or a written statement from the insurance company.

Car Insurance
Louisiana auto insurance requires minimum car insurance: $15,000 bodily injury per person per accident. $30,000 bodily injury for all persons per accident.
From Shreveport to Alexandria, Lake Charles to Lafayette, Louisiana has thousands of miles of roadways. They’ll take you from Baton Rouge down to the Delta. Louisiana’s roads are used by about 2.9 million licensed drivers, who each travel an average of 10,000 miles a year. Along the way, Louisiana’s drivers are involved in thousands of traffic accidents every day, including many that result in serious injury or death. Wherever you live and drive in the Bayou State, carrying adequate car insurance is both a legal requirement and commonsense protection. This is your guide to Louisiana’s basic vehicle insurance requirements and laws.
Louisiana state law requires you to carry a minimum amount of car insurance. Failure to do so can result in severe penalties that may include monetary fines and jail time. Under Louisiana’s tort system, you may also be liable for actual damages (expenses a-sociated with property damage and medical costs), economic damages (lost wages and earning capacity) and emotional and physical pain and suffering.
Medical payment coverage can be rejected if you prefer not to purchase it. Louisiana does not require you to carry additional coverage such as personal liability or Collision and Comprehensive. However, if you own property or other valuable a-sets, supplementing the minimum requirements can help you protect yourself from monetary loss.
Louisiana law requires that you carry proof of Louisiana auto insurance in your car and show it if a law enforcement officer asks to see it. Failure to do so can result in your car being impounded, your license plates removed and a yellow sticker being attached to your rear windshield. You have 3 days to provide proof of insurance. If you fail to do so and are stopped again, your car will be impounded immediately until you can provide proof of insurance and pay all fines, which can range from $75 to over $700.
In addition, if you fail to carry insurance and are in a collision with another driver who is insured, Louisiana’s “No Pay, No Play” law prevents you from collecting the first $25,000 in property damage and $15,000 in personal injury even if the other driver was at fault.
