A: SGLI allows a maximum of $400,000 coverage. For complete information regarding eligibility and coverage, please visit the SGLI page on the Department of Veterans Affairs Web site. To view your current coverage, sign in and look for Life Insurance on milConnect's Benefits menu.
What are the benefits of SGLI?
SGLI provides automatic life insurance coverage of $400,000 to Servicemembers upon enlistment. Members with SGLI also get automatic traumatic injury protection (TSGLI) and life insurance coverage for their dependent children and spouse under the Family SGLI program, unless the child or spouse is already insured under SGLI as a Servicemember.
What is the cost of SGLI?
SGLI costs 6 cents per $1,000 of coverage. All SGLI participants must pay a $1 monthly charge for TSGLI, this brings the monthly premium to $25 for $400,000 worth of coverage. When you get out of the military your SGLI will stay in effect for 120 days after your discharge.
Does TSGLI reduce the amount of SGLI payable?
False: Payment of TSGLI has no impact on the amount of SGLI payable. For example, if a Service member is insured for $400,000 of SGLI coverage and receives a TSGLI payment of $50,000 for a traumatic injury, that member is still insured for the full $400,000 of SGLI coverage, which will be paid upon the Service member's death.
