How to Get Car Insurance With No License - ValuePenguin
Unlicensed drivers can get auto insurance, but it may be difficult. The best way for an unlicensed driver to get insurance is to get a policy and list yourself as an excluded driver.
Another option is to get parked car insurance if you won't be driving your car at all. And if your license is suspended, you can get SR-22 insurance instead. Whichever option you choose, you won't be covered for damage if you do drive your car.
By law, you do not have to have a driver's license to get insurance. However, most insurers won't provide coverage to an unlicensed driver. Most national insurers — such as Geico, State Farm, Progressive and Allstate — will not offer you a quote without a license. A handful of companies do offer policies to drivers without a license, including The Hartford.
You should get quotes from small and regional companies or contact a local independent agent who may be familiar with insurers that provide policies to unlicensed drivers. You may need to call insurers directly, as you typically must provide a valid license number when you buy car insurance online.
The key to getting car insurance without a license is to buy a policy where you are listed as an excluded driver. This reduces the risk for the auto insurance company because you and your vehicle will not be covered if you drive the car and get into an accident.
Keep in mind: If you're pulled over, you'll be treated as if you were driving without insurance, which could result in fines and vehicle impoundment. You'll have to pay for any damage out of pocket.
Can You Get Car Insurance Without a License? | Progressive
It's possible to get car insurance without a license. But it may be more difficult to find coverage than it would be if you were licensed.
It's possible to get car insurance with no license, and if someone other than you will be driving your vehicle, it's necessary. But some companies may be wary of insuring customers without a license, while some states require you to list at least one licensed driver on the policy.
Some insurance companies let the person buying the auto insurance policy designate someone other than themselves as the primary driver — that's the person who will be driving the car the most. But other insurers don't, so you may need to shop around to find a company that offers auto insurance for unlicensed drivers.
When buying car insurance for the first time, the insurer typically asks for your driver's license number so they can check your driving history— this helps insurers determine what your rate should be. If you don't have a license, the insurer may ask for the driver's license number of the primary driver instead. They may use this person's driving history to determine your auto insurance premium. If that driver has a less-than-stellar record, you may end up paying higher rates.
The insurer might also list you as an excluded driver on the policy. That means the company won't cover any claims that occur if you decide to take the car for a spin and an incident occurs. Remember -- it's illegal to drive without a license, even if the vehicle is insured.
Your status as an unlicensed driver isn't permanent. If you have your learner's permit and are working toward getting your license, you need insurance before you can get behind the wheel. If you stopped driving because of a treatable health condition or other temporary situation, you might want to maintain coverage if you plan to drive again in the future.

Can You Get Auto Insurance Without a Driver's License?
So you need car insurance – but you don’t have a driver’s license. What should you do? Here, we answer all the questions you might have.
You buy car insurance as you normally would, shopping around for the best quotes. Then, you designate someone other than yourself as the primary driver. The primary driver is the person who will be driving the car most often. Because you don’t have a license, you cannot legally drive your vehicle. However, someone else can legally drive the vehicle after you buy insurance for that vehicle.
To legally drive on public roads in the United States, a vehicle must have car insurance. If someone else is planning to drive your vehicle, then you are required to buy car insurance for that vehicle – even if you don’t have a license.
You may also need to get car insurance to reinstate your license. Your state DMV may request proof of insurance to reinstate your license and driving privileges, for example. In this situation, you still have a driver’s license, but it’s not active until the DMV reinstates your driving privileges.
You Have a Learner’s Permit and Are Working Towards Your License: If your status as an unlicensed driver isn’t permanent, then you may want to buy car insurance in anticipation of getting a full license. If you have a learner’s permit, which allows you to drive with an adult in the car, then you may need to buy insurance before driving a vehicle.
Health Conditions that Temporarily Prevent You From Driving: Some drivers have temporary health conditions that prevent them from driving. In this situation, you may buy car insurance in anticipation of your condition getting better in the future.

Car insurance is mandatory in most states. See how you can buy it without a driver's license.
You can get car insurance without a license depending on the insurer, although many providers are hesitant to give auto coverage to people who don’t hold a valid driver’s license. Companies that will provide coverage will likely require that you list someone else listed as the primary driver. This person should be someone who is a member of your household and who will be driving your car on a regular basis. Even if you don’t plan to drive yet, remember that it’s necessary to have auto insurance coverage for people who will drive your vehicle, such as your spouse, children, parents or caregiver. You may also want car insurance if you have a classic car that isn’t driven frequently or at all or parked car insurance if you plan to garage your car until you have a license. If you don’t have a license, you should buy car insurance to avoid a lapse in coverage, which raises rates. Keep reading and see why else you should buy auto insurance.
Although most insurers will be uncomfortable insuring a car whose owner has no license, there is no law against it. There are insurance companies that allow the individual who is purchasing the auto insurance policy to designate someone other than themselves as the primary driver. You can get auto insurance by listing someone else as the primary driver on your policy and excluding yourself. The primary driver is someone who will be driving the car the majority of the time and who is a member of the insured’s household.
The insurance company will usually ask for your driver's license number in order to check your driving history when buying an auto policy for the first time. Looking at your driving history helps insurers determine your rates. The insurance company will ask for the license number of the primary driver should you not have a license. This person’s driving history will then be used to calculate your insurance premium. Remember, a driving history that shows accidents and/or claims will likely have higher rates.
The insurance company may list you as an excluded driver. This means your insurer won't provide you with any coverage if you are responsible for an accident. You will likely lose coverage if you are driving the car in an accident that is not your fault.
You will not always be an unlicensed driver - Those who have learner’s permits will still need auto insurance before they get behind the wheel of a car. Your child will most likely be using your vehicle while they learn how to drive, so make sure you’re sufficiently covered.

When You Can Get Auto insurance Without A License | InsuranceQuotes
Despite what common sense may tell you getting auto insurance without a driver license is possible in a number of situations. Here they are.
Driver’s licenses and an auto insurance poliicy seem to go together like Vin Diesel and fast cars. Yet despite conventional thinking, you don’t really need a driver’s license to have auto insurance in some states or in certain situations.
“We have found that some insurers just issue policies without asking for any form of driver’s license,” says Pete Moraga, a spokesman for the Insurance Information Network of California. “That’s truly remarkable because there is no way to verify their driving ability.”
It’s not big auto insurance companies that are tossing policies around like confetti, Moraga says. In California, most of the auto insurers that sell coverage to unlicensed drivers are companies that are small players, he says.
“Several of these companies have found a niche market that may include undocumented workers who are, by law, not allowed to get a driver’s license,” Moraga says. “We have found that in these cases, the insurance brokers use an international driving license or the driver’s license of the home country of the insured person.”
Getting an auto insurance policy without having a driver’s license is a crapshoot. There’s no set standard for auto insurance companies when dealing with unlicensed drivers — they may not even be aware that their policyholders don’t have licenses. And there’s simply no way to track how much auto insurance premiums are for unlicensed drivers compared with licensed drivers, according to Moraga.
