Getting your California insurance license is the first step to becoming an insurance agent in California. Whether you’re interested in selling property and casualty insurance, life insurance, health insurance, or any combination of those lines of authority, this article has the information you need to get started.
The California Department of Insurance has a 6-step process on how to become an insurance agent in California. We’ll walk you through step-by-step; from the license application to insurance test prep, to the California insurance exam, and beyond.
The first step to getting your CA insurance license is choosing which licenses you need. The most common licenses new insurance agents get are the property & casualty license (P&C), life and health insurance license (L&H).
The types of insurance products and policies you’ll be selling will determine which licenses you need. Here are some examples of the types of policies you can market with each license:
California requires that all insurance license applicants provide fingerprints prior to licensing. Giving your fingerprints will initiate a background check. If you have any prior misdemeanors or felonies, this may affect the outcome of your licensing efforts.

Renew your California insurance license by completing your CA insurance CE requirements on time. Learn more with our California insurance license renewal guide.
In order to keep your California insurance license in good standing with the state, you will need to renew your license by completing your California Insurance CE requirements before your expiration date.
In California, insurance licenses expire every two years. The expiration will be on your date of birth, biennially, based on the anniversary of your original license year. This means that if you were licensed in an even-numbered year, your license will expire on your birthday in the next even-numbered year.
Insurance CE comes in many forms. Most folks nowadays choose to take a self-paced course online, but you can also complete your credit hours by attending an in-person class or even a scheduled online webinar.
The most common method of continuing education today. These CE courses allow you to log in to an online platform any time of day to complete your credit hours. Most of these courses are a mixture of video and text combined with a knowledge exam at the end. Some platforms even allow you to take the course from your phone, which could be useful if you’re short on computer time.
This is how continuing education courses all began. Join your fellow insurance license holders for a live class taught by an industry professional. You may be able to find a “school” that provides all of your state’s required credits in a few full-day classes, or you might also take some shorter sessions to fill part of your requirements.

Life and Health Insurance License California - A 2022 Guide

Insurance License
Not sure where to start? This all-inclusive guide will teach you the A-Z of obtaining your Life and Health insurance license Ca (California). Let's begin!
California requires a pre-licensing education which is a regulatory education that enhances your knowledge of the insurance field, such as annuities and long-term care, keeping the knowledge specific to the line of authority in which you intend to work.
Hence, to become a Life, Accident, and Health insurance agent, technically two lines of authority, you’ll need 40 hours of coursework, an additional 12 hours of Ethics, and a California insurance code course.
You may either take the exam at CDI testing sites or PSI test centers situated in Sacramento, and Redding, to mention a few locations, or utilize PSI’s online services to take the exam over a computer in a secured area.
Whether online or at a testing site, the exams are taken in a proctored environment, meaning you should expect software to be monitoring your desktop, webcam audio, and video if remote, or if in-person, you’ll be under the strict supervision of exam overseers.
Furthermore, anyone who’s ever undergone a licensing exam would know that the environment can become quite stressful due to its rigid nature, so you should practice how to calm your nerves down when taking the intense exam.

Passing your California Insurance License Exam is a crucial part of becoming an insurance agent. Our guide offers everything you need to get started.
In this guide, we’ll break down the general information that you need to know in order to pass your exam, outline the differences between each examination line, and offer tips on both: how to prepare for your California insurance licensing exam, and on what to do after you pass.
The state of California uses PSI Services to administer its insurance agent licensing. This means that you can register and book all of your licensing examinations through the PSI website. Your test can be carried out online or in person.
The general questions test your federal insurance product and agent knowledge, whereas the state-specific questions test you on the California insurance regulations and laws that you will need to know in order to operate as an insurance agent.
If you failed your exam, your score report will include a diagnostic report that will show you how many questions you answered correctly. This can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses for any future re-examination attempts.
Note: You should focus on one exam at a time. This will likely increase the amount of time and effort you can allocate to each examination and should allow you to feel more prepared when you sit your exam.

As the largest and most populace state in the United States, California life insurance regulations come with a level of complexity many other places lack. The California Department of Insurance has strict policies in place that govern all aspects of term life insurance, whole life insurance and any ancillary policies offered by properly credentialed life insurance agents on behalf of the insurance companies that employ them. At American Insurance, we applaud all the work that the state of California does on behalf of life insurance consumers. Having the best information available leads to a properly educating customer and people who understand life insurance are far more likely to choose life insurance from American insurance than anyone else.
Being able to translate English and Spanish is not required to pass the life insurance exam or become a certified life insurance broker. However, with a diverse population of clients in California, being bilingual definitely does make an insurance agent more desirably. Passing the exam requires preparation and effort, but its just one of the steps a new life insurance broker must complete before becoming successful in California. Working with a great company like American Insurance makes all the other steps much easier for you!
