California Health Insurance: Find Affordable Plans | Affordable Health Insurance
How to find affordable health insurance plans in California. Learn how to enroll in California health insurance plans, what low-income options exist and what you need to know about insurance in California.
Residents of California have many options for affordable health insurance coverage. While group coverage through an employer is common, you can purchase California health plans from Covered California, enroll in Medicare or Medi-Cal, or purchase a plan directly from an insurance company.
Marketplace plans: California has a state-sponsored health insurance exchange, but you’re not required to use it if you don’t qualify for a subsidy or don’t want to utilize your If this applies to your situation, you can purchase health coverage through an agent or broker or directly from an insurance company.
Special Enrollment: Once the COVID-19 enrollment period ends, you may be able to enroll in a new health plan if you have a qualifying life event. Qualifying events usually result in a loss of coverage or a change in eligibility for your previous plan. For example, you may qualify for a special enrollment period if you give birth, lose your job, or move to California from another state.
Covered California: State and federal officials closely regulate insurance prices. If you decide not to use Covered California, you won’t pay any more for your insurance plan than you would if you purchased a plan from the exchange.
Coverage types: In California, 48% of insured residents have group health coverage. Another 25.3% have Medicaid, 11.4% are enrolled in Medicare, 6.6% have non-group coverage, and military insurance plans cover 0.9%. Just under 8% of California’s population is uninsured.
Best Cheap Health Insurance in California 2022 - ValuePenguin
In 2022, most people will get the best rates on California health insurance through L.A. Care, Kaiser Permanente or Anthem Blue Cross.
L.A. Care and Molina Healthcare have some of the cheapest rates, but their plans have limited availability. The Silver 70 HMO and the Silver 70 EPO are the most affordable Silver health insurance plans in California.
In California, you'll shop for plans through the state health insurance exchange called Covered California. Here you can also find out if you qualify for Medicaid or insurance subsidies based on your household income and family size.
For example, if you are self-employed and need health insurance, you may be able to purchase an individual plan through the health insurance marketplace. Keep in mind that an HMO plan is typically a great way to get a more affordable rate on coverage.
Higher-tier plans like Gold and Platinum have the most expensive premiums along with the smallest deductibles, while lower tiers like Bronze and Silver — or even Catastrophic health insurance — have high deductibles but cheap monthly premiums. For example, the monthly rate for the Gold plan is 30% more expensive than the price of the Bronze plan.
For example, for a Silver health plan, a 40-year-old in California will pay 28% more on average for the same coverage when compared to a 21-year-old. The jump in monthly cost grows even larger as you get older, with a 60-year-old paying, on average, 51% more than a 40-year-old for Silver-tier coverage.

Find out how the American Rescue Plan will drastically cut marketplace health insurance costs for Californians from Los Angeles, to Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego and all points in between. Enroll now during ACA open enrollment (through January 15 in most states).
California’s state-run exchange, Covered California, is widely regarded as one of the most successful established under the Affordable Care Act. During the open enrollment period for 2022 coverage, more than 1.8 million people enrolled in private plans through Covered California, far surpassing previous enrollment totals.
California enacted legislation in 2019 to create a state-based individual mandate and state-based premium subsidy program, both of which took effect in 2020. The individual mandate has a non-compliance penalty that mirrors the federal penalty that was in effect in 2018. California allocated $295 million in state funds to provide premium subsidies to people earning between 400% and 600% of the poverty level, but those subsidies ended up being unnecessary for 2021 and 2022, due to the additional federal subsidies provided by the American Rescue Plan.
California enacted legislation in 2019 that permanently sets open enrollment dates that differ from the rest of the country. California will continue to have a three-month open enrollment period, running from November 1 through January 31 each year.
Outside of this enrollment window, a special enrollment period is necessary to enroll in a private individual/family plan, either through Covered California or directly through an insurance company (subsidies are only available through Covered California).

Getting health insurance has never been easier, thanks to the Affordable Care Act. Before Congress passed healthcare reform, it was very tough for many people to purchase low-cost insurance for themselves and their families.
Health insurance can be expensive, but before you decide to go without it, take a careful look at the risks. For example, according to WebMD, there’s a 1 in 5 chance you will land in the ER at some point between the ages of 25 and 44, a trip that could cost you as much as $1,450 a pop. If you need surgery on a broken arm, you could be on the hook for more than $16,000 if you’re without insurance. In fact, 1 in 4 uninsured people will lose all their savings to medical bills, which remain the leading cause of bankruptcy in the U.S.
Health insurance companies were generally not required to cover specific areas of care. If you had a pre-existing condition, the health plan might have charged you a very high premium to get the care you wanted, or may not have been willing to sell you a policy at all. Companies used to have the right to exclude specific illnesses based on your health history.
Since Congress passed the Affordable Care Act (what some people call Obamacare), insurance companies can only consider three factors when they set your premium (the amount you’ll pay for coverage.) These factors are your age, where you live, and the size of your family. The companies cannot turn you down or charge you a higher premium because you have an illness or had one in the past.
Under the Affordable Care Act, the state set up Covered California, an online marketplace where insurance companies offer plans. The marketplace exists to help you get low-cost and affordable medical insurance plans and rates in California.

If you’re burdened with high health insurance premiums and increasing out-of-pocket costs, a health maintenance organization (HMO) plan might be right for you. HMOs are managed care plans that are also often the most affordable health insurance plans you can find. HMOs usually have their own network of doctors, specialists, clinics and hospitals, which allows them to negotiate a certain level of payments for the services their network provides.
HMO plans are a fantastic option for many California residents, but there are many factors to consider when determining if an HMO is right for you. Two primary factors that distinguish an HMO plan include:
Choice: When you join an HMO, you need to choose a primary care provider (PCP) from the HMO’s network. This PCP would essentially be your first contact for all non-emergency care.

If you’ve landed on this page, you may be wondering how the Affordable Care Act works in California. The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), also called the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare, is a health care reform meant to make health insurance accessible and affordable to all. It provides Californians with better health security by setting up modifications that expand coverage and lower health care costs. It also ensures more choice and enhances the quality of care for all.
The law has created marketplaces, popularly known as exchanges, where consumers can compare plans in an easier format. There are two kinds of marketplaces and the type you access will depend on the state where you live. There is the federal health insurance exchange (also known as Healthcare.gov), and then there are state-run marketplaces. California has its own state-run ACA marketplace, also known as Covered California.
The ACA overhauled America’s health care system, reducing national health care costs for individuals, families and the government. It addressed patients’ rights and protections and created new rules for the insurance industry.

What Is The Best Affordable Medical Insurance In California? - Top 5 List
Cheap Insurance is not the most Affordable Health Insurance In California. What is will surprise you. Find out and see the list of 5 top medical plans here.
Well, it depends on a few things. Number one is what price is affordable to you based on the medical services you need. Everyone’s budget is different. An “affordable” plan that doesn’t pay for what you want is pretty much useless and will end up costing you even more.
Cheap health insurance is going to be catastrophic coverage. You’ll pay the cheap monthly premiums and you’ll also pay for all medical expenses (except for your annual checkup and 3 office visits).
Catastrophic plans (also called Minimum Coverage plans) don’t begin to pay for anything significant until what you pay reaches a specific amount (typically $7,900 in 2019).By the way, Minimum Coverage plans in California are only available to people under 30 years old.
What is affordable for you is very specific to you. If you are healthy and rarely see a doctor, then a Bronze plan with fewer benefits might be all you need, so your “affordable” range will be lower. If you take an expensive medication or need to see a doctor 3-4 times a year to monitor your medical condition, then a Silver plan with good prescription benefits is necessary so your “affordable” range may be a little higher. As an example, let’s say you hurt your knee and need arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus. In a cheap plan, you will pay the full cost of the surgery, $2500 to $6000 depending upon where you have the surgery done. In a Silver plan, you will pay only 20% of the surgery cost, $500 to $1200.What good is a cheap plan if you end up having to pay hundreds extra each month in order to refill an expensive medication, or for medical expenses? As you can see, cheap is not necessarily affordable.
The Affordable Care Act (or Unaffordable Care Act, depending upon your perspective) health plans tend to be more affordable for people with lower incomes. This is because Covered California provides premium a-sistance to some families with incomes that fall within a specific range.
