Firefighter Patrick Brady, 42, suffered a fatal heart attack while responding to a massive blaze that broke out around 9:38 p.m. at a six-story apartment building on Kings Highway in Brownsville, officials including Mayor Eric Adams and FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker confirmed late Saturday night.

"He gave his life protecting this city that he loves and there is no sacrifice that is more selfless than the actions that took place this evening," Mayor Adams told reporters, honoring the fallen Brooklyn firefighter.

“I want to express my deepest sympathy for Ms. Brady, his wife, and his family. This is a firefighter family. They have been dedicated to protecting the lives of New Yorkers. We will all cherish Patrick’s memory. We realize how painful this is for the family and for the people of this city.”

Tucker said the 11-year FDNY veteran went into cardiac arrest while working on the roof of the burning building.

First responders tried to save Brady at the scene before he was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, where he tragically died, the commissioner wrote in a post on X. Officials said four other firefighters and one civilian sustained minor injuries.

Adams noted that Brady’s brothers, Jimmy and Brian, his cousin Pete, and his uncle Pete are all current or retired firefighters. Later, the FDNY shared a photo of the entire Brady family proudly wearing their uniforms.

Fire officials said Brady’s death is the second line-of-duty loss for the FDNY in just two weeks. Paramedic Salih Abdur Rahman passed away on Oct. 29, shortly after completing a shift at the FDNY Fire Academy on Randall’s Island.

“Firefighter Brady died at a fire in Brownsville, Brooklyn, carrying out the greatest traditions of the FDNY,” First Deputy Fire Commissioner Mark Guerra said.

“He comes from a great fire department family. I ask you to keep in mind his entire family, the FDNY family, and very importantly the officers and members of the companies that he was at work with tonight when he lost his life protecting the citizens of the City of New York.”

Brady joined the FDNY on July 14, 2014. After graduating from the Fire Academy, he served with Engine 227 in Brooklyn before transferring to Ladder 120 in 2022, where he continued his dedicated service.

Tucker said the Belle Harbor resident is the 1,163rd FDNY member to die in the line of duty.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams addresses reporters at a press conference following the death of an FDNY firefighter on Nov. 9, 2025.

In the early hours of Sunday, about 250 of New York City’s Bravest lined the streets outside Brookdale Hospital, where Brady had died, to honor his ultimate sacrifice as his American flag-draped casket was carried out by eight firefighters and loaded into an ambulance bound for the medical examiner’s office.

In a solemn tribute, dozens of mourning firefighters, joined by Mayor Adams and other first responders, stood at attention and saluted Brady as the ambulance slowly pulled away from the hospital.

“This is called a dignified transfer,” veteran first responder David Burns said.
