Authorities say a college financial aid advisor allegedly strangled his girlfriend and then set fire to their upstate New York home, trapping her and their newborn baby inside.
Kidane Haile, 30, was indicted Thursday following a horrifying morning blaze on Oct. 18, when Buffalo firefighters rushed to an apartment on Norwood Avenue, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office said.

When first responders entered the burning home, they found 29-year-old Kathleen “Katie” Carrig and her 4-day-old son, Noah, unresponsive. The young mother and her baby were pronounced dead at the scene, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors say Haile strangled Carrig — then torched their home with her still inside.
Firefighters dragged Haile from the flames and rushed him to a hospital, where he spent days recovering from severe smoke inhalation, officials said.
Just days after leaving the hospital, Haile was charged with second-degree murder, BTPM reported.
Haile’s girlfriend, 29-year-old Kathleen "Katie" Carrig, and their 4-day-old baby boy, Noah, didn’t survive — both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Medical Examiner ruled Carrig’s death a homicide — saying she was asphyxiated after being strangled.
Investigators are still working to determine how baby Noah died — and prosecutors say more charges are likely on the way.
WIVB reported that Haile — a college financial aid advisor at the University at Buffalo — is accused of the unthinkable.
The university did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment, but noted that it maintains a 'robust disciplinary process' for cases where an employee may have been involved in criminal activity.
Haile appeared in court Thursday and was ordered held without bail.
“We are saddened by the tragic death of this young mother and her newborn baby. While this case remains an active investigation, my office has secured an indictment against this defendant, who is accused of intentionally killing his girlfriend prior to the fire,” Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane said in a statement.

“We are committed to a thorough examination of the evidence and anticipate filing additional charges against the accused. My thoughts remain with the family of these victims as we continue to seek answers and justice,” he added.
Haile could spend 25 years to life behind bars if convicted, prosecutors warn.
Her obituary described Carrig as a 'loving mother' — and a devoted companion to her dog, Stella.
She is survived by her parents, her sister, and countless loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who supported her throughout her life.
Investigators continue to probe the incident, which remains under active investigation.
