Just months before his wife’s fatal fall from a California parking garage, Mitt Romney’s brother had filed for divorce — and, according to court papers, tried to cut her out completely.
In June, 81-year-old George Scott Romney filed for divorce from his 64-year-old wife, Carrie Elizabeth Romney — citing “irreconcilable differences,” according to documents obtained by The Post.
Romney — a veteran attorney and former political candidate — asked the court to “terminate its ability to award support” to either party, records show, a move that appeared aimed at ensuring his wife wouldn’t receive a dime.
Four months before tragedy struck — before his estranged wife plunged from a California parking garage — Mitt Romney’s brother, George Scott Romney, had already moved to end their marriage.
Court papers from the divorce, filed by Romney’s lawyer, showed that both sides had agreed to “mediate property and support.”
Carrie didn’t stay quiet — she fired back with filings of her own, asking Romney to pay alimony and foot the bill for her legal costs.
She’s also asking to take back her old last name, Dimas.
The divorce case was still unresolved when Carrie’s body was found Friday night at the bottom of a parking garage in Valencia, roughly 35 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
Authorities are still investigating whether her fall was intentional or accidental, while the LA County medical examiner has marked her cause of death as “deferred” as of Tuesday night.
Cops say no foul play is suspected.

After just over eight years of marriage, the couple split in May, and Romney filed for divorce the very next month, court filings reveal.
Although they had been together since 2012, Romney insisted in his court filing that there was no property to split between them.
The couple apparently shared a $725,000 condo in Valencia, and neighbors say Carrie had been living there not long before she died.
“She was quiet. Really nice,” a neighbor, who wished to stay unnamed, told The Post.
On Tuesday, Romney was seen walking through the neighborhood with his hood drawn tightly over his face, shielding himself from a rare dreary spell in Southern California.
While it was unclear what her finances looked like under the looming divorce, Carrie had a checkered history, including a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2001 with a previous husband.

This would have been Romney’s third divorce. Though the couple shared no kids, both have adult children from prior marriages — notably Romney’s daughter, Ronna McDaniel, who once led the Republican National Committee.
Romney is the older brother of Mitt Romney, Utah’s former U.S. senator and the 2012 Republican presidential candidate who fell short against Obama.
He is the son and namesake of George W. Romney, Michigan’s celebrated governor and a former member of President Nixon’s cabinet.

A veteran corporate lawyer in Michigan, Romney once pursued political ambitions of his own, though none came to fruition.
Romney sought the Republican nomination for Michigan attorney general in 1998 but was defeated. Later, in 2013, he reportedly considered a bid for a Michigan Senate seat, Michigan Public Radio reported.
In 2012, Romney took the spotlight at the Republican National Convention by reading Michigan’s roll call as his younger brother clinched the nomination.
Romney was unavailable for comment on his wife, but his famous brother spoke out with a heartfelt statement.
“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” the former senator told PEOPLE.
“We ask for privacy during this difficult time,” he added.
