Mitt Romney says his family is ‘heartbroken’ after his sister-in-law dies in a tragic fall in Los Angeles—just months after splitting from his brother.
“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” Romney said in a statement to People on Monday. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
Carrie Elizabeth Romney, 64, was found dead Friday evening on a street near a shopping mall parking garage in Valencia, California, around 8:30 p.m.—a shocking discovery that has left her family and community reeling.

Authorities revealed that her car was found abandoned inside a parking garage near downtown’s Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Los Angeles County Deputy Brenda Serna said in an email that it’s still 'unknown at the moment' whether Carrie jumped or fell from the multi-story parking garage—or from a nearby building.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Carrie died on Friday, though the official cause of death is still listed as "deferred," signaling that further tests and investigations are underway. According to People, her body has been marked "ready for release."
Officials told NBC Los Angeles that, at this time, there’s no indication of foul play.
Carrie was married to George Romney, 81, the ex-Utah senator’s older brother—a prominent attorney and the father of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel.

Scott, the brother of the former presidential nominee, filed for divorce on June 10 after eight years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences, Daily Mail reports.
In the filing, he also stated that most of their assets had been acquired individually before the marriage. He noted that Carrie was seeking spousal support, which he opposed, and requested that she resume using her maiden name, Carrie Elizabeth Dimas, according to the outlet.
While the details of how they met remain unknown, the couple tied the knot in November 2016.
However, they seemed to keep their relationship under the radar. From 2012 onward, the couple quietly withdrew from the public eye, steering clear of social media, interviews, and joint appearances, Daily Mail reported.
The split would have brought Scott Romney’s third marriage to a close.

At 81, he continues to work as an attorney at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn in Michigan and serves on multiple boards, including Compuware Corporation.
In 2012, Romney launched a presidential bid against former President Barack Obama, rallying strong national support but ultimately losing the race.
During his brother’s 2012 campaign, Scott Romney was the most publicly visible of the siblings, according to the New York Times.
While serving in the Senate, Romney was the only Republican to vote to convict President Trump during his first impeachment trial in 2020.
The former presidential nominee repeated his vote during Trump’s second impeachment trial the following year.
Romney, a vocal critic of Trump, slammed the president in a 2019 op-ed, pledging to take on what he described as "destructive statements" endorsed by the White House.
