On Wednesday, Erie Indemnity Co. announced that the ongoing network outage impacting all of its systems for the past five days was caused by a security-related incident.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission and a statement posted on its website, the insurer disclosed that on June 7 it detected unusual network activity, which was later confirmed to be caused by an “information security event.”
Upon discovering this activity, the company promptly took measures to address the issue and protect its systems. It also informed law enforcement authorities and is actively collaborating with them.
The company stated that it is maintaining ongoing protective measures and, with the help of third-party cybersecurity experts, is conducting a thorough forensic investigation to fully understand the scope of the incident.
“The investigation and response are ongoing, and the full scope, nature, and ultimate impact on the company are not yet known,” the announcement stated.
Erie Insurance is not alone in facing cyber challenges. On Wednesday, Philadelphia Insurance Co. announced it is also dealing with a network outage that has disrupted its phone and email systems, along with customer access to online services.
Erie Insurance had not previously disclosed a probable cause or origin of the outage, nor has it confirmed whether any data has been compromised.
Erie Insurance customers remain unable to access their online accounts or reach customer service through digital channels. However, the company’s local agents, claims representatives, and customer care teams continue to assist policyholders. Those needing to file a claim can contact their local agent or call (800) 367-3743. Additionally, customer service is available by phone at (800) 458-0811.
During this outage, Erie Insurance cautioned customers that it will not initiate calls or emails requesting payments, and strongly advised against clicking on links from unknown sources or sharing personal information via phone or email.
The property and casualty insurer employs over 7,000 people and is supported by a network of 14,000 agents.
