ITR filing: How to generate CRN challan/mandate form when making tax payment offline

Along with online routes, taxpayers can pay their income tax offline as well. It is necessary to generate a challan form with a Challan reference number (CRN) from an e-filing portal in order to make an offline payment using the option pay at a bank counter.

According to the Income Tax website, “Taxpayers are advised to make tax payment through online payment mode available on e-Pay for faster credit. Those taxpayers who want to make payment through offline mode should generate challan/mandate Form bearing CRN through ePay tax module only. Only such challan /Mandate Forms bearing CRN should be submitted to bank for tax payment.”

For offline payments through RTGS, NEFT generation of Mandate Form bearing CRN through e-Filing portal is mandatory. After generation of challan, please submit the same at your concerned bank branch for making payments.

How to generate CRN challan/mandate form
You will be able to download a Challan Form / Mandate Form for the challans that have already been generated and saved under the Generated Challans tab if you use the offline service.

After logging into your account, navigate to the e-file > e-Pay> generated challan tab to download your challan and submit it to your bank for tax payment.
Taxpayers are recommended to use the online payment options provided on the e-filing portal, such as Net Banking, Debit card, and Payment gateway, for speedier tax credit.

Important FAQs on offline tax payment, according to the Income tax website

1. Is there a time limit to pay tax after challan has been created?
You are required to make the tax payment within 15 days from generation of challan (i.e. 15 Days from the date of CRN generation). In case of Advance Tax, you need to make the payment within 15 Days from the date of CRN generation or before 31st March of the current Financial Year, whichever is earlier.

2. How will I know if my payment has been successfully remitted through the e-Filing portal?
After successful payment, you will receive a confirmation message on your email ID and mobile number registered with the e-Filing portal. Additionally, Payment History will reflect the status of successful payment along with CIN, which will be provided by Bank on confirmed payment.

3. What do I need to do after downloading the Mandate Form?
You can remit the tax amount by using the Net Banking facility of your bank or over the counter by instructing the bank to debit your account (via Mandate Form).

4. Can I pay through cheque or demand draft? Is there any limit of cheque / DD transaction allowed?
Yes. There might be a limit through cheque / demand drafts depending upon respective banks.

5. Can I pay through cash? Is there any limit on cash transaction?
Yes. Cash transaction is allowed for an amount up to Rs 10,000 per CRN.

6. What do I need to do after downloading the Challan Form?
You can visit any branch of the selected bank and remit the tax amount over the counter via Cash / Cheque / Demand Draft (along with Challan Form).

7. Can RTGS / NEFT be made for tax payment using Net Banking facility, or do I have to visit bank along with Mandate Form?
Yes, you can use Net Banking of your bank account or download and print the Mandate Form and make the payment at your bank using the Mandate Form.
