How to e-verify income tax return (ITR) using your Aadhaar number To avail this service, your mobile number must be updated with the PAN-linked Aadhaar

A filed income tax return (ITR) will be considered as invalid if it is not verified within 120 days of the date it was filed. Aadhaar card holders can electronically verify their income tax returns (ITRs) using their Aadhaar number. To avail this service, your mobile number must be updated with the PAN-linked Aadhaar.


Why should you e-verify?

To finish the return filing procedure, you need to verify your income tax returns. An ITR is considered invalid if it is not verified within the allotted period. The most practical and quick method to check your ITR is through e-Verification.

You can e-Verify your returns online using:
OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaar, orEVC generated through your pre-validated bank account, orEVC generated through your pre-validated demat account, orEVC through ATM (offline method), orNet Banking, orDigital Signature Certificate (DSC).

Aadhaar OTP on registered mobile number

To verify your ITR using the Aadhaar-based one-time password (OTP), your mobile number must be linked to Aadhaar and registered in the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) database and your PAN must also be linked with Aadhaar.


How to e-verify income tax return (ITR) using your Aadhaar number

Step 1: Log in e-filing portal and click on the e-Verify Return option
Step 2: On the 'e-verify' page, select 'I would like to verify using OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaar' and click 'Continue'
Step 3: A pop-up window will appear which would prompt you to select the tick box saying 'I agree to validate my Aadhaar details'

Step 4: Click on 'Generate Aadhaar OTP’
An SMS with the 6-digit OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.
Step 5: Enter the OTP received.

On successful submission, your ITR will be verified. The OTP is valid for only 15 minutes.
A success message will be displayed along with a Transaction ID and an email will be sent to your email ID registered with the e-Filing portal.

Mobile number is not updated with Aadhaar

You need to update your mobile number with Aadhaar to e-Verify your return using Aadhaar OTP. You can update your mobile number by visiting Aadhaar Kendre. Normally 90% of the update request is completed within 30 days, according to the UIDAI website. After successful updation of mobile number, a notification will be sent on the given mobile number.

You can also e-Verify other requests, responses and services to complete the respective processes successfully, including verification of:

Income Tax Forms (through online portal / offline utility)
· e-Proceedings
· Refund Reissue Requests
· Rectification Requests
· Condonation of Delay in filing ITR after due Date
· Service Requests (submitted by ERIs)
· Uploading ITR in bulk (by ERIs)
